Rissi Palmer – Rissi Palmer $9.98 Personnel: Rissi Palmer (background vocals); Andrew Ramsey (vocals, electric guitar); Kim Keyes (vocals); Tom Bukovac (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Chris Rodriguez, John Willis, Biff Watson, Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar); Jeff King , Jerry McPherson, Kenny Greenberg, Will Owlsey, J.T. Corenflos (electric guitar); Bruce Bouton (steel guitar, dobro); Robert Johnson (dobro); Jonathan Yudkin, Tammy King (mandolin, fiddle); Dan Shea (mandolin, programming); Illya Toshinksky, Aubrey Haynie (mandolin); John Pedersen, Stuart Duncan (fiddle); John Catchings (cello); Jelly Roll Johnson (harmonica); Keith Thomas (piano, bass guitar, programming); Tim Akers (piano); Dane Bryant, Shannon Sanders (keyboards); Dave Pomeroy, Glenn Worf, Jimmie Lee Sloas, Mike Brignardello, Steve Mackey , Mark Hill , Craig Nelson (bass guitar); Chris McHugh, Lonnie Wilson, Dan Needham, Shannon Forrest (drums); Javier Sol!s (percussion); Melonie Daniles, Perry Colemen, Lisa Cochran, Melodie Crittenden, Ron Hemby (background vocals); Nashville String Machine.Although she isn`t the product of American Idol or Nashville Star, Rissi Palmer has made her way through some of the talent shows that have taken an increased role in identifying young performers. She competed in Hal Jackson`s Talented Teens (formerly known as the Miss Black America pageant) and made the finals on Star Search. It is not surprising, therefore, that as a singer she exhibits both the pipes and the somewhat artificial style of successful contestants. The songs on her self-titled debut album, three-quarters of which she had a hand in co-writing with Nashville pros, are the typical collection of romantic clich\u0002s that might have been expected. Her debut single, "Country Girl," which somehow took five people to write, attempts to be a crowd-pleasing anthem in the tradition of "Redneck Woman," but also to subtly address the issue that cuts both ways in her career, that she`s an African-American from St. Louis trying to make it as a country singer in Nashville. The question of whether the novelty of that will help or hurt her is actually less pressing than whether she will develop from a good singer with a repertoire of second-hand vocal effects and second-rate songs into a sufficiently distinctive artist to matter. Rissi Palmer gets her over the first hump, which is establishing credibility. As the judges on those contests could tell, the sheer vocal talent is there. The debut album does no more than confirm that; now the real work begins. ~ William Ruhlmann Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Robert Palmer – The Very Best Of Robert Palmer $10.44 Personnel: Robert Palmer (vocals, guitar).Photographers: Fabio Nosotti; Mark Allan. This generous 17-song collection provides a comprehensive overview of Robert Palmer`s many fine songs, from his early work as an eclectic white soul singer working in a number of styles, to his reign as MTV icon and rock`s most sophisticated dresser. The set begins with a remixed version of Palmer`s signature song, the massive hit "Addicted to Love," and ends with the original album version. In between are an impressive number of Palmer smashes, from his breakthrough hit, "Bad Case of Loving You," to "Simply Irresistible." The set includes the eerie gem "Johnny and Mary," the astringent dance grooves of "You Are in My System," and "I Didn`t Mean to Turn You On." Key offerings from Palmer`s one-shot supergroup, Power Station, are also present: "Some Like it Hot" and the wildly successful take on T. Rex`s "Get it On." Adding some variety to the string of smash hits are Palmer`s cover versions of the songs of Bob Dylan (a reggae take on "I`ll Be Your Baby Tonight"), the Staples Singers, and Marvin Gaye. Carl Palmer – Anthology $27.98 Contains 28 tracks.Arrangers: Emerson, Lake & Palmer; Carl Palmer. This double-CD set raises a lot of questions and red flags, though most of the doubts will be resolved by the music itself. For starters, the first disc, credited to Emerson, Lake & Palmer in terms of its focus, is a tiny bit of a cheat, since it`s not a truly comprehensive look at Palmer`s contribution to the latter group — it consists largely of Palmer`s solo work within the context of the group name, all dating from 1977`s Works (which was essentially three solo albums and a group side) or later, some as late as 2001, and that material only tells part of the story of Palmer`s work with the group. Additionally, the structure of the set is a little odd — on an intellectual level, it is understandable why this double CD was arranged the way it was, with the ELP tracks on disc one, while disc two covers the periods before and after; the ELP stuff is qualitatively different from the rest, as music, in terms of its goals and what Palmer was doing. It`s also probably the main selling point to lots of fans — it`s just a pity that the set is arranged this way, because it relegates a pair of supremely attractive mod-era tracks by Palmer`s first band to record, the Craig, to a secondary position, and it leaves "Love Light" by the Liverpool group the Chants — for whom Palmer played drums on that song — in a similarly neglected spot, and does a similar disservice to Atomic Rooster`s "Decline and Fall."In fairness, however, the set does encompass virtually the entirety of Palmer`s career and art, or at least the accessible high points; from his beginnings as a potentially top-ranked session drummer (he could have been the percussionist`s answer to Jimmy Page) to his emergence as a member of Atomic Rooster, listeners get a sketchy but satisfying view of his developing ambition. Asia is represented by "Heat of the Moment," and the material by Palmer`s more pop-oriented group P.M. is eminently accessible. The 3 project material shows a mix of pop and progressive sensibilities that should have proved more popular than it did (their version of "Eight Miles High" is fun). And the disc ends on a deeply personal note, with a live performance by Palmer with the Buddy Rich Orchestra — an acknowledgment of Palmer`s debt to the legendary jazz drummer (whom he got to know in the later years of his life) — playing "Shawnee." The ELP material is all on disc one, and it is also sketchy — the more developed 1977 version of "Tank" is present, and it is the earliest composition represented, but obviously Palmer`s contributions to the trio go deeper than a track such as that; the opening section of "Tarkus" could just as easily have been included. In Palmer`s case, as opposed to that of his bandmate Keith Emerson, at least his reach doesn`t exceed his grasp — "Concerto for Percussion" by Joseph Horovitz is well withi |

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Emerson Lake & Palmer [Remaster] $9.98 Audio Remasterer: Andy Pearce. When Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer left the Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster, respectively, they created the first prog-rock supergroup. ELP`s 1971 debut was full of just as much bombast, technical facility, and brash classical-rock fusion as prog admirers could have hoped. A large part of the band`s appeal was the keyboard mastery of Emerson, who shows both superhuman chops and sophisticated compositional abilities on the classically tinged instrumental "The Barbarian," which opens the album."Take a Pebble" and "Lucky Man" represent the more pop-oriented ballad side of the ELP sound, for which bassist and singer Greg Lake is chiefly responsible. The instrumental epics "The Three Fates" and "Tank" find all three musicians interacting at a furious level, throwing awe-inspiring licks around with uncanny ease, with plenty of octopus-armed drumming from Carl Palmer. Epic, ambitious, and overflowing with technical mastery, EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER paved the way for the prog rock phenomenon of the `70s. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Robert Palmer – Pressure Drop $9.49 On his second solo release, Robert Palmer remains close to the musical territory he had covered on his first outing, SNEAKIN` SALLY THROUGH THE ALLEY. Like its predecessor, PRESSURE DROP is a loose, groovy combination all of the most backbone-loosening elements of ska, reggae, African Juju, New Orleans funk, rock, and blues. This is head-bobbing music, flavored with tinkling piano and languorous slide guitar licks, with Palmer`s rough-and-ready vocals on top of a percolating backbeat. On hand once again is Lowell George–this time with his band, Little Feat–and the Meters, perhaps the cream of all crack session bands. While the first record had an overriding flavor of New Orleans gumbo, PRESSURE DROP shows Palmer trying his hand at a wider array of styles. The straightforward pop balladry of "Back in My Arms" and "Which of Us is the Fool" indicate the singer stepping away from pure Little Feat-style rock, while one of the strongest cuts is his faithful cover of Toots And The Maytals` immortal "Pressure Drop." Palmer contributes more of his own compositions than on his first outing, and again covers another fine Lowell George song, "Trouble." Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
